Filename variable w/out filename extension

is there less kludgy way create variable returns filename without filename extension, putting small, filled white box on top of it?

fm has filename(short) , filename(long) building blocks,
with difference being pathname. way know
would ensure filenames not have extension in
first place (you have use double quotes around name
prevent fm automatically adding .fm extension when saving).
