Optical Sensor to avoid obstacles

i'm looking use optical sensor avoid obstacles, sensor doesn't have greatest range. however, long shows basic movement obstacle work. i'm looking little guidance on programming sketch such project. first time getting arduino robotics, , unfamiliar how work optical sensor.

i'd check tutorials on adafruit , sparkfun. sell sensors , have code play with.
