Help with TinkerKit DMX shield - no signal

hi,

i picked tinkerkit dmx shield uno. i've connected 3 wires "output" terminals, uploaded example fadeup sketch, , watched nothing happens.

i'm new shield , dmx, i've sent commands device dmx driver, , it's network address 1. i'm hoping i'm overlooking simple, wrong number of max channels, or missing jumper, or something. experience know few basic places start troubleshooting?
