Trying to build a device that senses cars passing by

hello all! i'm purchasing first arduino it, , first thing i'm trying recognize vehicles passing within 8-12 foot range , ring bell when 1 passes by. i'm not sure how start project, or type of sensors should use. have advice? thank much!

ultrasound sensors might easiest, this has range of 4m, this of 6.
