i installed 9.10 on inspiron 8200. nice old machine 1600x1200 resolution. (watch this, apple!)
installed proprietary nvidia driver. proceeded fine until reboot, when instead of graphical screen, got black screen. nothing worked (not ctrl-alt-backspace). so, pulled plug, booted recovery command line mode, eliminated /etc/x11/xorg.conf (and tried few other things), , have screen back.
alas, [a] don't know whether running unaccelerated or accelerated driver (how find out?); , [b] if former, magic incantations needed accelerated driver work. love speed dvd viewing @ least.

hi, have xorg.conf file:
--------------------------------------
section "screen"
identifier "default screen"
defaultdepth 24
option "addargbglxvisuals" "true"
option "usedisplaydevice" "dfp"
endsection
section "module"
load "glx"
endsection
section "device"
identifier "default device"
driver "nvidia"
option "nologo" "true"
endsection
--------------------------------------
note added option under screen section (usedisplaydevice).
default ctr monitor used. have tell nvidia use digital flat panel.
boot in console mode , use nano editor add line, save, reboot , enjoy.
regards,
flush
