i've used fm write several books conventional ink-on-paper publication.
we took these , adapted them publication pdfs, too, task
that involved easy stuff generating pdfs live internal xref links
(e.g., toc , index -- handled more or less automatically fm)
as more labor-intensive stuff live links internet (urls , email
links), changing color of link text indicate clickable,
replacing black , white photos color, , eliminating gutter margins
that page images didn't see-saw , forth when scrolling vertically through
a book.
i'm getting ready write book, , know outset
be published both ink-on-paper , pdf. because know pdf
one of publication formats, i'm planning make more liberal use of
color , live links have in past, because know
ink-on-paper target (and 1 sell better),
i have make sure book in format, too.
the books write tend require modifications between printings (e.g., fix
bugs, address changes have taken place in world live in, etc.), ,
it not uncommon there dozen or more printings in few years,
the process of going fm document pdfs (one ink-on-paper, 1 pdf
epublication) needs close automatic possible.
i'm trying figure out how set fm document achieve above.
what i'd 2 sets of styles pages, paragraphs, characters,
etc., because way use 1 set when generating pdf ink-on-paper
and set when generating pdf epublication. handle
different coloring of link text, presence or absence of gutter margin,
etc. not handle using color photograph or diagram when generating
epub pdf , black , white photograph or diagram when generating
ink-on-paper pdf. (i use color , rely on being
converted black , white e.g., printer, doesn't yield
results using different images/diagrams designed
use of pdf being generated.)
one of concerns if try maintain 2 sets of styles,
easily tweak 1 without making corresponding tweak other. also, if
i make change 1 set, i'd have careful import files
making book.
does have experience kind of problem or suggestions on how
to approach it? fwiw, i'm using fm6, i'd willing upgrade newer
version if helpful. (reading through feature lists , reviews of
fm7 , fm8 has not revealed new features sound particularly useful or
compelling, although covet multiple-level undo.)

we sort of manipulation @ end of workflow: ctp (computer plate) takes place. ctp software allows not use specific imposition schemes re-introduce things gutter margins allows color conversion including redifinition of spot colors etc.
sure, requires thorough naming of colors within fm documents , workflow permits pass through things color names ctp engine.
thus able maintain single source, including single set of templates, these documents.

p.s. use fm 6 on unix , have written our own ipl postscript converter make sort of workflow "bullet proof".
