Thread: proprietary ati video card driver

hello, it's been while since i've been here. running ubuntu 8.10 (ibex think) , i've been out of loop. tried upgrading 9.04 other day , got message saying video card no longer supported flgrx (sp?) driver.
did searching around , found newest version (the 1 used in 9.04 apparently) has dropped support ati cards. saw thread on board , lot of people seem have issues version of driver. here have same video card me , have issues new driver? if so, these problems solved in newest version of ubuntu (9.10)?

information (from catalyst control center):
driver version: 8.54.3
catalyst control center version: 2.1
graphics card: ati mobility radeon x1400
opengl version: 2.1.8087 release

i have exact video chip-set on laptop. proprietary driver not support chip-set under version of x used in 9.10. older drivers don't support newer x.

however, open source driver pretty job, allowing me use compiz desktop effects. it's far perfect, however, "second life" (a 3d world/game) performs terribly, instance.

basically, if you're not using 3d games, job.

otherwise may want stick 8.10 while more.
