How important spacer.gif within table empty cell?

i've used spacer image (or  ) within empty cell on years keep consistency between browsers, , recommended. has seen stats on in recent times? i'm curious recent versions of browsers still have problems , if it's still important so.

one reason ask i'm needing several 1px height black table cells , it'd nice if didn't have keep putting 1x1 spacer within each empty cell. tests, i've check several recent browsers , render empty black 1px height cell same.

i don't know kind of going for, wonder if achieve same effect using css put 1 pixel black border on something.

i've found ie6 needs in cell affected css. example, if use css place black border around table cells ie6 won't apply border empty cells. instead of putting spacer image in cell use non-blanking space ";nbsp".
