fun of it, i'm going have go @ old "musical floppy drives" project - i've asked dept old drives , they've given me box of usb ones. can't find info anywhere on driving usb fdds arduino - can tell me if possible or point me in direction of tutorial? don't want go writing sort of usb driver working, if it's particularly difficult, i'll hunt around 34-wire fdds instead...

it not possible talk usb client device without usb host shield on arduino.
your best bet take drive apart , wire arduino outputs direct bits want control.
