Thread: Problem with Karmic / pulseaudio on windowed / fullscreen switch.

hi,

i'm having odd issue in karmic / gnome whereby if switch between windowed / fullscreen in apps (scummvm example), can cause said app start maxing cpu @ 100% utilisation. i've been able narrow down bit, , i've found once happens, way things calm down normal kill pulseaudio process. system/application continue ok while, problem resurfaces after few further fullscreen / windowed switches. behaviour occurs using compiz or metacity, , happens when no other apps running other 1 in question. also, not pulseaudio process consuming clock cycles according top/system monitor, it's app itself.

apps i'm able reproduce on scummvm , oolite both installed ubuntu repositories. when cpu running @ 100%, application becomes lot more sluggish. exiting app brings cpu normal, if it's relaunched, shoots straight again. stated, way can restore things killing pulseaudio process.

sequence of events recreate:

launch scummvm
alt-enter fullscreen / window.
repeat few times (usually couple before problem occurs)
eventually, application's cpu usage ramps 100%, laptop fans speed etc. stay until app killed, , it's impossible run app again until pulseaudio has been killed.

i'm not sure how troubleshoot further. scummvm app using alsa plug-in, can see in sound control applet pulse. can work around (try avoid alternating between fullscreen / window, kill pulseaudio frequently), nice know causing it, or if else sees similar karmic.

laptop fujitsu-siemens p7010 btw, , scummvm app uses around 45% cpu on machine. audio realtek ac97 solution, , video intel 855gme. issue ever occurs after fullscreen / window switching, when there has been no actual resolution change. run hours if left in 1 mode or other, can't survive more few switches between. it's issue because tend lot can go between firefox , fullscreen app etc. oh, , problem still occurs if firefox not running.

if can shed light on happening cause this, or suggest few things can cause these kind of symptoms in ubuntu, i'd grateful.

thanks.

i've managed eliminate problem disabling pulseaudio. didn't uninstall , switch esound lot of people though, because ubuntu seems tightly integrated pulse , other full screen switch problem, haven't had other issues. think method used quite common, repost in case else wishes know.

created "client.conf" file in ~/.pulse folder, , added line:

autospawn = no

did

killall pulseaudio

causes stay killed.

can fullscreen switch as want without of cpu problems described. seems there lots of issues pulse atm going i've seen on various linux forums evening, can see potential / features, needs mature bit more probably.
