recently upgraded jaunty karmic on xp dual boot system, , knocked out sound in windows, while ubuntu sound unchanged.

restored sound windows running chdsk /r cmdprompt, when went ubuntu , windows had same problem. did third time before deciding write comment.
though i've been using ubuntu couple of editions now, hamper use unless can find fix.
i love ubuntu, want keep windows.
running repair couple of hours every time return windows not option.
has got ideas, please?
