Thread: Serious Upgrade Problem (Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10)

hello fellow ubuntu forumers,

relatively new ubuntu; have installed/used:

- 8.04 (wubi)
- 8.10 (clean install - dual boot grub either windows or ubuntu)
- 9.04 (upgrade 8.10)
- 9.10 (attempted upgrade 9.04) ????

previous upgrade 8.10 9.04 painless , flawless. attempted upgrade 9.04 9.10 had serious problems (ended reverting 9.04 via acronis true image home restoration).

event log:

- attempted update 9.04 9.10 via update manager (29-oct think)
- update appeared go smoothly (but slow - suffer dsl)
- booted 9.10 , desktop appeared normal; didn't have time wring things out.
- few days later, returned, booted 9.10 , ran update manager (maybe 20mb of stuff downloaded)
- opened firefox , puzzled see strange page scrolling on web pages.
- video jerky , page extremely slow scroll: video card struggling redraw page scrolled down.
- first thought new version of firefox 3.5.4
- noticed maximized window content scrolled same way; regardless of application
- jerky movement , slowness of page redraws rendered ubuntu unusable!
- smaller windows (sized 25% of screen size) seemed scroll ok?

- troubleshooting:
- system / administration / hardware drivers revealed system not using ati proprietary driver ati radeon 4850 card (fglrx); ok in previous ubuntu build.
- 9.10 not let me re-enable video driver (fglrx) in either hardware drivers or synaptic package manager (even though present).
- thought force system use fglrx driver removed os ati video driver package manager , rebooted.
- still no fix!
- discovered screensaver functionality totally inoperative!
- ok; @ point gave because didn't want devote time required fix problem.
- reinstalled 9.04 (via disaster recovery imaging software)


there not online upgrade problem; except did find interesting , made me feel may not alone:

adopters bloodied ubuntu's karmic koala

ubuntu 9.10 causing outrage , frustration, adopters wishing they'd stuck previous versions of linux distro.

blank , flickering screens, failure recognize hard drives, defaulting old 2.6.28 linux kernel, , failure encryption running taking toll, adopters turn web answers , log fresh bug reports in ubuntu forums.

problems causing biggest headaches in graphics, reports of flickering or dead screens. adopters have re-downloaded , re-installed ubuntu 9.10, , people have scoured web answers hit same issues.

bug has being filed in ubuntu forums on how ubuntu 9.10 breaks graphics drivers , x, preventing log in or startx.

conflict graphics cards nvidia , ati seems issue, there's no answer "why" or obvious fix.

plan:

- i'll wait few weeks , attempt upgrade again
- maybe i'll remove ati fglrx driver (use os version) before upgrade , re-install once upgrade complete. idea????

ps: thought clean install of 9.10; since i'm using grub dual-boot, i'm afraid windows lost master boot record (mbr); since mbr points grub (not windows system partition root files: ntldr & boot.ini) , wonder around in wilderness of non-funtional computer.
