i spent evening trying go ubuntu 9.04 new 9.10, , total disaster. first, tried upgrade manager told me upgrade clicking, tried it. looked okay start, wanted change background. told me did not have complete language package (i assume english), , offer me. got password, froze. had power off pc. trying boot up, went through same process again. made bit more gain, froze again. oh, , did tell me of folders misnamed. seemed wanted /home/user/desktop become /home/user/download, had subfolder named download. said keep old names. didn't work. next time told rename them, , hung bad.

i'd burnt cds iso, decided try installing way. strange, instead of colored progress bar , symbol, looking , old black , white episode of interrogation room in near dark 1 overhead light. ghostly, not attractive @ all. , boot process cd took @ least 6 times longer when booted 9.04 cd. that's progress? anyway, again whole issue of wanting rename folders, nothing missing parts of language package. looking @ desktop. want go computer under places, , locks again. definately not good.

oh yes, selected manual mode partitioner , did not want reformat / drive. reason? still hoped find prior work on drive after install. changes folder , subfolder names or locations of key files should blindfolded , forced off diving ramp top of tall ship. , yes, first removed 27 so-called obsolete packages, 83 towards end of install, while installing 307 new ones. have no idea lost in process.

recovery modes in boot process did no good. not sure how start gnome after try repair packages. had enter sudo shutdown -r , have reboot. doubt did anyway. trying revert earlier kernel release proved no avail, new install of 9.10 had changed much, , end bare white screen, nothing else. screw around settings took long right? people, democrats? don't vote.

going try reinstall of 9.04 , hope tht somehow on course, , not reformating / drive able recover user had there. have done backup first, after 4 versions of ubuntu, though trust work, , lavish praise read in 3 articles (with windows 7 , ubuntu 9.10 pretty in tie each other), made me overconfident. know better, not helps much.

real bummer. hope helps others being rash in efforts move forward. @ worse, guess reformat of root (/) partition let install, definately not upgrade 9.04. means starting over.

for one, it's advisable fresh installation of ubuntu. doing updates in ubuntu risky in windows. wouldn't consider in windows, @ same token, wouldn't consider in ubuntu.

secondly, ubuntu gets released on 6 month intervals. that's wicked fast developers. had problems karmic. don't blinded assume karmic version of ubuntu out there. insane stability, try current lts release - 8.04.3. otherwise, stick 9.04.

ubuntu users blessed, , people don't realize it. new releases every 6 months, , each release stabilized patches , updates weeks after release. our system32 colleagues stuck waiting 3-5 years new version , @ that, takes 12-18 months new release stabilize.

in short:

stick 9.04.
don't upgrades.
check 9.10 in month.
