best resources to learn more about the Joomla internal search engine? - Joomla! Forum - community, help and support

i have launched first joomla site , i'm working through high priority improvements need made. largest issue on plate right behavior of site's own search engine, seems little erratic (sometimes fine, sort of random). need learn how best improve content searched it, , if want try , improve search engine myself (though really don't wanna hack core).
could possibly direct me pages on joomla site or categories or posts on forums gets discussed? due of limitations of forum's own search engine , fact talk of external search engine optimization goes on in here, i'm having hard time locating discussion of joomla search engine itself.

if helps know, running 1.0.12 , non-standard search related mambot 1 jcal pro (and it appears work great). primary issues while works great, of time site's search engine returns "any" word looking results above exact phrase matches or "all" words matches, , seems backwards me. also, absolutely have around 20 character thing, users in armed revolt on (and can't believe myself). i'm not sure understand why it's there, because if has code injection risks should easy mitigate php clean whatever people type in (strip out code formatting characters or sql commands or whatever).
