i shoot in raw canon 40d , months have been using elements 5.0 (under windows xp) relevant raw converter plug in open , process them.
this week had recover deleted files portable hard drive. nothing had been added drive since deletion. uneraser found loads of .cr2 files, including ones looking for. file names , numbers identical except started xmg rather img. each of files on 10mb, looks promising. i've saved them separate drive.
so far good. when try use elements open .cr2 files, message "the wrong type of file". i've tried renaming them replacing opening "x" "i". no good. i've tried version of canon dpp came 40d. no ("cannot parse file").
interestingly, of other .cr2 files recovered open. seem earlier ones took 400d rather 40d, , deleted months ago. can't whether it's exclusively case 400d files open , 40d ones don't. haven't been through thousands of files!
anyone had experience or have suggestions of might try next?

sounds 'recovered' files corrupted. have backups?
