Thread: Ubunut 9.10 "alongside" install option

for weeks (has been months now?) have been suffering well-specked core duo gig of ram running ubuntu 8.04, on couple of hours after reboot, gets slower , more congested requiring frequent re-boots. noticable in firefox, whereas opera , ephiphany don't seem suffer much. fortunately machine in city , gets used few days month.

see if quick fix, decided install 9.10 , favourably impressed new installer, partitioner, sems vastly improved on 8.04. offered (new me) option install 9.10 alongside existing, knee jerk reaction was, "that's good, if don't it, i'll uninstall , try figure out what's wrong 8.04"

unfortunately (probably) did not think through installer going space, , when brought up, had not found old /home partition, , time necessary depart return here leaving me unsure of had happened , unable investigate until there.

here first question. have done partition-wise (the 8.04 had swap, system, , home partition; big hdd lots of room of is/was devoted /home)? guessing 9.10 took space needed /home, , hope took "unused" space. ideas?

(i expect question might commented linux user, not ubuntu users.)

going theoretical discussion because cannot access other computer here. more theory, because want see rest of 9.10 looks like, , 98% sure want upgrade computer well.

has swap, system, , home partitions difference being computer has 300 gigs in unused partition. second question is: when install 9.10 recommend upgrade on 8.04, or clean install existing system partition, or "alongside" utilizing part of unused partition? idea of installing alongside 8.04 want make sure sees existing home partition. matter of mounting home in 9.10?

want result keep desktop intact of quick launches @ top now.

in advance.

should have posted in different 1 of forums "installation , upgrades" , if so, 1 please?
