Thread: Create an updated reinstall CD/USB Image

i have sort of random question see if has solution or answer for.

play systems, try new versions, software etc. result, tend reinstall os often. save data, keep /home on own partition. question relates reinstall of main / partition.

everyone, system state it, programs setup , installed, on laptop/desktop working correctly. lose careful setup work if choose try different flavor of linux or if upgrade goes horribly, horribly wrong.

in ubuntu, (i'm on karmic @ time), install updates , software date. ubuntu has downloaded install files, scripts , debs required install these updates , software , kept around in /usr/src directory if remember correctly.

on actual question: possible create new install image (cd or usb image) automatically install updates without having re-download them, if choose install on current setup?

thought process make clone of partition, find way write cloned partition onto / partition when wanted restore working system. issue using straight clone that, understanding, need equal amount of space store clone on, , don't have dvd or usb drive hold 25gb / partition (albeit, 25gb 4 gb of actual data).

have experience 1) making clone of large partition , shrinking fit in smaller storage unit, , 2) using clone, via live cd assume, recreate installed system.

end goal of able tweak ubuntu installation how it, able install say, fedora or mac osx, try new software, , afterwards have ubuntu installation without having re-download updates. , no, setting partitions testing of other system not option @ time due hard drive space constraints.

think @ point i'm rambling, if haven't explained myself (which very, possible) please ask , attempt clarify.
