Strange artifact in some NEF and .dng files

using nikon d80 4 gb sandisk extreme sdhc card; shooting full resolution nef; mac g5, mac os x 10.4.10, images run through adobe dng converter 4.1. image opened in camera raw 4.1 (and 4.2) window within photoshop cs3 extended.

in photos dark areas, there single, tiny, transient on-screen artifact in form of red dot, either 2 or 3 pixels square, appears in same location against, say, dark sky or trees. can persist or literally disappear on own after 2 seconds. if file reopened in same session, red dot may not there @ all. if loupe tool used, disappears within loupe after 2 seconds, though may persist in unmagnified screen. news opening image .psd in photoshop shows no sign of anomaly, no matter how magnified.

note: can appear if drag nef or .dng file on preview. in case, not disappear.

does have clue may causing this?

a screen shot comparison camera raw 4.1 attached below. left image shows dot in place in section of photo , loupe.the right image shows dot gone, persistent in unmagnified image.

neil

this hot pixel. during camera raw's initial low-resolution read of file (to display quickly) not filter our hot pixels. second high resolution read applies hot pixel filtering.
