Hardware Verification/VHDL formalism for Arduino softcore

i'm working on project involves using hardware verification or vhdl formalism test arduino.
it's part of larger project, @ moment, want know if there's way try avr8 soft processor here-http://papilio.cc/index.php?n=papilio.arduinocore

can done? , if how?

i'm aware there several open source tools doing so. wanted best method verify vhdl code.
