i've done recent install of freebsd 6 on old pentium 166 48mb ram. thought make use of instead of leaving collect dust. had fresh install of apache, php, mysql (as of apr 2007) ports , haven't made changes original settings (just make install clean in ports collection). static page loads fine, joomla (with default sample contents) takes 4-8 seconds load.
is because cpu slow or there tune ups can do? keep in mind have no components, etc added @ all. fresh installs.

48mb very little memory , have serious tweaking enough serve dynamic content without massive disk swap usage. i'd start replacing apache 'lighter' lighttpd, tune mysql's my.cnf use waaaay less memory (but less caching harder on cpu) , recompile php minimum set of options needed joomla. apart disable services you're not using , consider recompiling minimal kernel (start bootdisk kernel tutorials).
yeah, know - lot's of work. options spend $20 , buy 128-256mb in simms on ebay ;-)
