both source of max232 have ti , maxim ics. bought several ti. in datasheets, both give suggested circuit c3 switches vcc or gnd, note can connected vcc or gnd.

it questionable connect 5v voltage difference between 8.5 or 10v , 5v +3.5 or +5 instead 8.5 or 10v if tied ground.

c3 smooths output +ve voltage. can connected ground or vcc , same job.
when connected vcc there less voltage across cap, 8 - 5 = 3v. allow use smaller voltage rated cap, 6.5v 1 instead of 10v 1 if connected ground.
