Thread: Continuous network activity

hi there,

couple of days ago noticed strange thing on notebook computer. machine had been booted , sitting idle, conky showed regular continuous network activity. opened system monitor , going on shown in attached file.

background. machine dell vostro 1400 , running windows xp , ubuntu 8.04 lts dual boot. while ago (probably 2 months) trashed xp installation , since have run ubuntu.

connect internet @ home via adsl line using d-link airplus extreme router (using either wireless or ethernet, dynamic ip allocation). @ work connect lan gives me internet access access 2 printers in office (both on ip ports).

problem occurs in both situations. run firestarter, in standard "as installed" configuration. have checked machine's "visibility" using grc's shields website , in both scenarios (office , home) machine, according grc, totally invisible (this courtesy of isp, since results same or without firestarter running).

mystified activity is, concern racking lots of network traffic costs me money (at least @ home). considering machine online more or less permanently, gets quite substantial.

not know start looking problem. looking @ processes running under system monitor not reveal strange me, no expert.

appreciate ideas on , guidance in tracing problem , correcting it.

many thanks!
